Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing
Guys, look up Alan Turing- his life was incredible. Known as the “Father of Computer Science” he created a very basic computer (or the foundation for one) in the f&%$ing 1940s! He helped Britain and the U.K. during WWII, cracked the Enigma code, loads of stuff- but then in the 1950s, he was charged as a criminal for being homosexual. He had the choice of prison or chemical “therapy” (also known as “chemical castration”). He chose the latter.
Turing died of cyanide poisoning two years after the “therapy” began. He truly was a genius- and sadly, like most geniuses, he was terribly persecuted.
Later on, Queen Elizabeth II pardoned him from all charges and in 2009, the current British Prime Minister wrote an elegant, official apology.
(I know it’s horrible what was done to Turing, but kudos to the U.K. for the apology/pardon.)
If you’re interested in codebreaking during WW2 I recommend a book called Secrets of Station X by Michael Smith. Quite detailed but fascinating account (military history geek warning) ;)
